Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My school's mission is to be a learning community that fosters academic and personal achievement, social responsibility, and fitness of the mind and body to ensure success beyond our doors. My first graders focus on learning and take many fitness breaks during the day to make sure we meet this goal.

My class is a wonderful mixture of students at different academic levels who come from various cultural backgrounds.

The majority of them receive free breakfast and lunch. They have to work hard to overcome some of the obstacles that face them on a daily basis. My first graders love to learn but also love to wiggle! They work their brains hard all day learning the new, rigorous, curriculum. We take brain breaks throughout the day but students love to, and need to, move while they work. Two of my students have ADHD and studies show that having these chairs will greatly increase their ability to focus on their work. This means their academics will increase and they will also be less distracting to the other students in class. I'm requesting additional chairs to ensure all students have the opportunity to see the benefits of additional movement.

My Project

My students will use these chairs while working in small groups with me and while working independently throughout the day, in all subject areas. Since the chairs are lightweight the students can move them around the classroom to whatever table at which they are working. They will also sit on them during whole group instruction on the classroom carpet. My two students with ADHD will always have the option of sitting in the chair while the extras will be rotated around the remainder of the students to provide all students the option to wiggle throughout the day. These chairs will not only improve students' focus, but will also improve their core strength, posture, and balance. This will help us to meet our schools mission statement, fitness of the mind and body. The stools can also be used as reinforcement for positive choices and will help students learn to share and ask appropriately for their turn.

This project will greatly impact my students ability to focus on what they are learning.

Wobbling on their chair will help them listen and focus during instructional time. The output of energy in a quiet, positive way allows their brains to focus on learning. During independent work time, students will focus on practicing their new skills instead of being distracted by their wiggles. This will help ensure they are building a solid foundation upon which all of their future learning will be built.
