My Students
Our school, located in a rural Georgia area, is an amazing mixture of students from a wide variety of economic and ethnic backgrounds. As a Title-1 elementary school, a large percentage of our student base comes from low-income families. These students often come to school with few or no school supplies. We also have students in our school from very affluent homes, where the supplies and possibilities are endless.
Through the use of flexible seating, my classroom has become a home like environment where collaboration with peers and movement is welcome.
This past school year the flexible seating model was not only an alternative to the traditional desk, but one where students were successful and happy. They enjoyed learning where they were comfortable. Our subject averages showed that this model was effective, and our environment was controlled and comforting.
My Project
During the previous school year, I implemented a flexible seating model in my classroom. Without hesitation, I can say that this model is not only effective for student academic success, but also for creating a comfortable, warm classroom environment. My students enjoyed the various seating options and were able to use them through all facets of our day.
Recently, I visited another local elementary school in which the teacher had a few wobble stools in her classroom.
They were not only popular with the students, but I was able to observe students with specific needs, who because they were able to wiggle just a bit were absolutely engaged in the lesson! I personally sat on one of the stools and noticed the difference that just a change in seat could make! I decided immediately that Mrs. T.'s classroom needed wobble stools!
