My Students
I have a busy classroom of 26 fourth grade students who come to school each morning ready to learn despite language barriers and the struggles that come with living in low-income households. We are a Title I school where over 80% of students receive free or reduced lunch. Many of our students and families are not native English speakers and have recently moved to the United States. Nearly half of the students in our class speak a language other than English at home and qualify for English language services at school. Despite these hardships, our students are not lacking ambition but rather resources!
My Project
Flexible seating allows students to take charge of their learning and make the choices that work best for them. Currently my students are choosing to work in a variety of locations in our room such as: at different height tables, sitting on yoga balls, or sitting on floor pillows. Making sure students are comfortable is an essential component in motivating them. I have noticed amazing differences in my students when they are given a choice in their seating. In the past two years of incorporating flexible seating in my classroom I have seen students work better with peers, increase focus and learning stamina.
Creating an environment that allows all of my students to feel relaxed and ready to learn is my ultimate goal.
The products that I have selected will help my students by giving them additional seating options to make more effective learning choices. The wobble stools are adjustable and will allow students to sit at desk/higher tables but will still allow some movement. These will be extremely beneficial for some students that just need to get the wiggles out.
I have seen how choice can positively affect my students work and demeanor and hope that the additional options will help us grow even more!
