it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
As a high school math teacher, close to 200 students pass through my classroom each day. With them comes 200 sets of experiences, trials, and tribulations that got them to our campus each day. Some of our students have diagnosed mental health needs such as depression and anxiety while others might just be having a rough day.
I started this year with about 10 calm strips in my student 'sticker' bin - they have all been claimed and affixed to Chromebooks, water bottles, and even the strap of a backpack!
While this little strip of adhesive seems like such a small 'fix,' it is a quiet, calming way for some of the fidget/agitation out! I have already noticed that it's very easy for me to see when a student is paying more attention to the calm strip, and I can quietly check in with that student and see if there's something bigger that needs to be addressed or if they can reset themselves with the strategies in their personal toolbox.
The wobble stools have been a welcome addition to many classrooms and students are asking for more. Not only does it allow them to not be super rigid/still during class, but they're easily portable (for teachers and students!) which allows for immediate flexible grouping and/or reshuffling of groups to allow a student a few minutes to calm/reset themselves. Many of my traditional finger tappers/desk drummers (which is a great source of anxiety/stress in other students!) can now wobble around on their chair during class without anyone else being disturbed.
