The students I teach come from an area that over the years has been a high poverty, high crime area. It is my goal to change that stigma and help give them the best of every opportunity that I can whether it be by providing basics, or new opportunities. Having flexible seating is important to brain activity. Different students have different learning styles and students are best able to learn when they have more choice in where the sit and are able to meet their own learning style.
My Project
Having the opportunity to select where they sit impacts learning. Research shows (as does my own personal experience from using stability balls and bouncy bands this year) that students' focus improves when they can move a bit while they work. I have seen students with ADHD be able to tune things out, and focus on work. I have seen students who are angry about something be able to calm themselves down by using an alternative seating choice. It is my desire to grow the idea of alternative seating in my classroom this year so that I may continue to help my students.
