The students in my first grade classroom are between the ages of 6 and 7 years old. They primarily come from low socioeconomic backgrounds and attend a school that is located in a poor, rural area of South Carolina. Many students come from a single-parent household, in which the parent works more than one job and/or works double shifts. Because of this, the students spend a lot of time with older siblings and/or relatives after school, while parents are working to make ends meet. Our students are hungry to learn about the world and each other.
My Project
My students are very active and love to move around; however, a lot of instructional time requires students to be seated especially during small group reading and math instruction. Some students even have physical conditions, such as ADHD, that actually make this task even more challenging.
Because my students love to move in their chairs and "wobble" while being seated, many times they fall out of their chairs during small group instruction in math and reading.
Not only is this a safety concern, it also prohibits the child and other students in the group from focusing on the instruction that is being given. Guided Reading is imperative in all grades, but it is especially important in first grade as the students are truly learning how to read. During small group math instruction, the students are being challenged while also being supported in areas of weakness.
I am excited to see how these wobble chairs will improve our guided reading and small group math instruction each day! By helping me with this project, I know my students will be able to fully focus on guided reading and small group math instruction while wobbling their jitters out!
