This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

The school bell rings and you can hear their excited voices as they head down the hall to our classroom.

My 5th graders are high-energy, enthusiastic, and full of personality.

I teach in a Title 1 school where over 75% of the students receive free or reduced lunch. They are an active bunch and are always on the move! During a recent class project where they got to design their ideal classroom, ALL designs included areas for movement. My students desire and requested Hokki Stools, stability balls, and wobble cushions.

My Project

My students love to move and daily ask to use the few options for flexible seating that allows them to move while learning. We dance and sing during lessons but there are those times when they need to be seated at a table or desk. When asked to design their dream classroom, every project featured Hokki stools, stability balls, and wobble cushions!

Being able to move while learning increases engagement, focus, and retention of material.

In traditional classrooms, many students are required to sit at a desk for 4-6 hours of the day! Hokki stools, stability balls, and wobble cushions allow students to sit and still move. Students have a choice of seats in our classroom and move to different places or pillows on the floor while they are working according to their needs. If they need slight movement, students may choose a wobble cushion to place on their seat. Stability balls allow students to bounce and Hokki stools sway. This involuntary movement calms many students and allows them to use energy to focus on their school work instead of the need to fidget or move.

Being in school all day does not mean they need to sit still! Having options for movement throughout the day increases brain activity, keeps their minds engaged in learning, and has added health benefits too. They are working their core muscles, creating stronger, healthier kids in the process.

When asked how they felt about the seating options in our class, students replied: "Using a ball to sit on keeps me out of trouble. I'm not up and out of my seat and I can concentrate on my work!", "The Hokki stool is the best! I can wiggle and not fall out of my chair.", "Please get more wobble cushions! We all need our own!"
