Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

I am a school social worker. I adore our students and am grateful for the opportunity to support them. The students that I work with are frequently those experiencing short term or long term mental health, environmental, academic, or socio-emotional challenges. Most of our students come to our school with many ACEs (Adverse Childhood Experiences) which are impactful. Many are referred to me once they are already in crisis mode. These amazing young people deserve to feel safe when they come to see me. While I enjoy building rapport with them so that they feel comfortable and secure, I can imagine how much more enriching our interactions could be in a space that is a respite from stress and emotional pressure.

Currently, my office space is very institutional.

Ecru colored walls, steel grates across the windows, a heavy metal filing cabinet, and a cold linoleum floor. I envision transforming the space by covering the windows with curtains that will enhance the beauty of the natural light with a soothing teal curtain to detract from the steel-covered windows. Instead of hard chairs, a couch to relax upon, and a large teddy bear to provide comfort and a sense of safety. The rolling table will make use of the limited space, as students sit on the couch, and practice positive coping skills such as drawing, journaling, enjoying the experience of kinetic sand, or concentrating on fidget toys to unwind and slow any overthinking or negative thoughts. A variety of interactive experiences from games and bracelet making supplies will be useful tools in teaching students to have positive interactions with others by building social skills. I imagine how a colorful rug might quiet the room a bit from the outside urban sounds and aesthetically complete the room's transformation.
