With the Right Tools, Our Garden Will Grow!

My students need garden trowels for turning soil, buckets for gathering their harvest, and compost bins for creating great garden soil!

My Students

My students are a diverse group of learners, who come to our school from all over the county we live in and are eager to learn. Creating a garden at our middle school has generated a huge amount of interest among students at our school. Our sixth and seventh graders are able to take an elective course called Introduction to Agriculture, where they learn through our small garden plot.

Our eager students have been so excited that they have generated many ideas and want to expand our garden by adding more garden boxes, chickens and a bee hive!

Agriculture students are able to plan, plant, harvest, and cook the fresh vegetables from the learning garden. My students love this! They cannot believe the way fresh vegetables taste! One student even said, "These peas are so much better than the ones from the grocery store."

My Project

Currently, our students do not have enough trowels to use in the learning garden. So, some students are left watching while others do the soil turning and planting. Trowels are used to turn the soil and to create holes for planting already sprouted plants.

Students love it when it is time to pick their harvest from the garden.

However, we do not have buckets that are large enough to hold the peas, carrots, onions, or salad greens that we have grown. Students need a few three-gallon buckets to hold contain the harvest while picking.

Great soil is a vital part of successful gardening and my students have learned the science behind rich garden soil. Currently, my students do not have a compost bin. After picking and cleaning the produce from the garden, students need a compost bin in order to create more rich garden soil. This will help our garden continue to grow.
