This is my 3rd year as a teacher. My students are mostly low income students who live in the East New York area of Brooklyn. What makes them so special is that they are attending an all boys school. Understanding that boys learn differently than girls is one of the biggest discoveries in being able to educate them. Boys are full of energy and love working with their hands. They are visual learners and often times have to hear instructions more than once but that's what makes them so great. They are not afraid to be themselves.
My Project
These materials will help my boys become organized learners. It will allow for them to stimulate their visual learning as well as encourage hands on work. I have observed in my 3 years of teaching here that the boys love morning meeting but I'm sure they would love it even more with a carpet that's welcoming. Boys also enjoy drawing and making up great stories about super heroes. What better way to encourage that other than to provided them with a writing journal. During guided reading groups the white boards and magnetic letter will work great with the building of phonemic awareness.
