This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
The children I have worked with for the last 15 years come from struggling neighborhoods in a Title I school. With hard working parents, or a single parent working two jobs just to support their children.
What I love most about my students is their passion about reading and becoming better readers.
When I first meet them, they are timid readers, shortly they become confident readers. They still struggle, as I do at times, but you see the fire in their eyes while falling for a book, story or character. Amazing to watch it happen.
My kids are special because, they put their heart and sole into their learning every day. When I ask them to try their hardest to read new words, they are strong-willed and driven to do their very best to achieve their goals.
The students I work with have struggled with dyslexia for their whole life. Unfortunately, for some of them it took some time for their teachers to figure this out. So, they struggled trying to read on their own as best they could until they finally got the help they needed. That's why I became a special education teacher; I personally know the struggle.
My Project
Many of the students I am working with this year are my students from last year. I use an accelerated reading program to help increase their reading comprehension skills. The book we need this year is the 2nd book in the series.
I don't have enough books to send home with each student as is now required by our district due to COVID.
We are not allowed to let students share books, so with out enough books some students would be left out of the read aloud. I work in a Title I school and funding of books for teacher use is nonexistence.
