This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
We've all had a moment when music captures our very purest feelings. Whether you are singing in the shower or your car where no one can hear you or you've had more experience playing an instrument, you understand how empowering music can be. Help me provide more of these moments to my students.
My students are wonderfully energetic children with amazing creative minds.
I teach in an elementary school that has grades K-5. We are a charter school and we have no budget for the music program. I am very lucky to have the music teaching position and a room to have it in. My students live in an inner-city environment and 90% of my students live at or below the poverty line. Many of my students are English language learners and find that music is a common language that they don't have to work so hard to express.
My students are strongly focused on taking and excelling on their state tests and seldom have the opportunity to really show their personalities through creativity. They all love music and are so thirsty to get their hands on instruments and play them. It gives them a small break from the strict, regimented style they are used to in the classroom but reinforces self-discipline using a high interest subject.
My Project
With your help my students will be able to do many things. This grant will provide recorders for the entire 3rd grade. Next year they will all take recorder and will have an instrument they can use in school and at home to practice with. This is the first step for my students in learning how to read sheet music and learn how to play together in an ensemble. These things will let them express themselves but also help with their literacy levels and teach them how to communicate with each other towards a common goal.
The grant also includes musical instruments that I can use to teach songs in our general music classroom. Boomwhackers are a simple and fun way to teach my students pitch while letting them release a little of their frustration. They are played by whacking them on the floor to produce a note. I've also included rhythm instruments to help teach reading the rhythm of notes and to give students little hands things to grasp, and doing that will ignite their interest.
Please help us to even the score.
Many students in our city and in the surrounding suburbs have the benefit of fully funded music programs with instrumental education. With our current budget cuts and the economy, music is the first thing that is being cut. Without your help we will not be able to provide the rich experience that our students so desperately need to thrive and to enjoy coming to school each day. Every child deserves a balanced education which includes arts instruction!
