With a Little Sensory Support We Can Learn!

Help me give my students the wobble chairs so that they are able to sit and focus on their teacher's instruction.

My Students

Our students come to our sensory room for a safe place to regulate themselves throughout their school day. They are often students struggling with sensory processing disorder or general dysregulation. Sensory processing difficulties have a negative impact on the student's ability to participate in an academic environment. They come to our room to engage in a variety of activities and tasks that help them to regulate their sensory systems so that they can return to class and engage more fully in academics. It is important to have the right equipment, tools and strategies available for the students when they come into the room and also to lend out to classrooms. An occupational therapist works with the staff to create an individualized plan for the student using the equipment, tools and strategies that are available to help the student learn to regulate themselves. Our goal is to help our students maintain inclusion in the regular classroom as much as possible and having a sensory room fully equipped with the strategies they can use in the sensory room as well as in their classrooms helps them to have a successful day.

My Project

Sensory strategies allow students to gain independence in their learning and make the choices that work best for them. When they are given the sensory support they need they can sit and focus on the teacher's instruction or participate in a learning task. Without the support they may be distracted by their own sensory needs and become unable to learn.

My students are noticeably more engaged in their work and less disruptive of their peers when they are given a sensory strategies to help them regulate.

They are more independent and require less prompts or assistance from an adult to engage in routines, tasks and activities within the educational environment.

The products that I have selected will help my students by giving them additional seating options to make more effective learning choices. The wobble stools are will allow students to sit at circle time or at tables but will still allow some movement. These will be extremely beneficial for some students that just need to get the wiggles out. The compression vests provide deep pressure that is soothing and calming. It is like getting a deep hug while still allowing the student to engage and participate in classroom activities. The calming ball enables students to obtain a little extra hug when they are feeling dysregulated and need a little more support.

I have seen how sensory support can positively affect my students work and demeanor and hope that the additional options will help us grow even more!
