My Students
My students are part of a very caring, supportive small town in Southeast Michigan. Our school district is mostly white, affluent families. After the events of the past 1-2 years with George Floyd and Black Lives Matter and now examining my own white privilege, I would like to expose my students to people and characters that don’t look like us.
Teaching my students characters that don't look like us and understanding those that don't look like us, is my ultimate goal. I will be participating in #classroombookaday and reading a picture book to my class each day during our SEL and class meeting. These books will vary from topics such as empathy, inclusivity, all the way to 'What is a hijab?'.
My Project
My students and I live in a world that has so much to offer beyond our city limits. Our population lacks cultural diversity and struggles with 'White Privilege'. I would like to expose my students to characters and events that they might not encounter on a daily basis. I plan on reading 1 picture book each day to help me achieve my objective.
Picture books are an excellent tool for me to help my students to see and understand others from around the world. I want to read "The Proudest Blue" by Ibtihaj Muhammad so my students can understand why they may see a woman wearing a hijab. I want to read "Adrien Simcox does NOT have a horse" by Marcy Campbell so my students may have some empathy towards students that are not able to have all of the things that they want.
