My Students

Our elementary school lies in an amazing school district which encompasses SeaTac Airport. Our school reflects the diversity that comes from being welcoming to immigrants: 10 languages spoken and 72% poverty living in temporary housing or homeless. We are blessed with many forms of instruction but we need support in using technology.

We are Urban/Suburban as in many of the housing areas we pull from are multi-family dwellings, but even in the single home dwellings you can find multiple families.

Many of our families depend upon welfare agencies to find housing and food coupons. While many of our families may speak a language other than English, they are not necessarily literate in their own languages. This has created a problem for communication or for finding translators to meet the needs of getting the students’ needs home to the parents and their wishes back to us.

Our neighborhood looks across the beautiful Puget Sound at the Olympic Mountain Range… just looking at the view stimulates us and makes us happy to be here every day. Then we see the wonderful extended families walking their little ones to school.

My Project

Our students are needing a new direction for handling the huge data infusion into managing life after school. Our goals include integrating technology into all students’ curricula to increase understanding this new world. Students are expected to communicate electronically – both giving and getting feedback via electronic comments; to applying concepts and procedures to solve complex math problems via 2-way conversations with students in international settings; to learning the English language and exploring coding – the NEW language.

Kids LOVE learning when they have independence to explore safely.

Our current math curriculum includes 90 minutes a week of embedded problem solving using interactive sites. Our newly arrived friends are allowed to learn English using language software that advances them quickly to be somewhat comfortable in their new setting. Our school is focused on blending learning to include parents of all ethnicities and we use technology to help us translate what students need from home as well as what the curricula means at each grade level. All of our embedded programs are accessible from home – though a small percentage own computers. We encourage the families to use the local library as a good source for extended learning.

We are seeing a large percentage of girls and non-English speaking students rising up in their confidence in Mathematics, coding and science as they become more adept with computers. This is equating to more opportunities as they grow older and move to secondary schools. The jobs of the future are all seeming to need a strong technology education from Modern Mechanics to use of Cad software in construction to facial imaging for our friends in the personal appearance field… Then there are those going to post-secondary higher education… no question everyone needs technology fluency. I am requesting for three Chromebooks to allow my student's to partake in the exploration process during learning.
