My fourth grade class consists of 32 students. Twelve of my students have special needs. They have different learning disabilities as well as behavioral and emotional needs. All of my students have different ways of learning and it is my job to make sure I address all their needs. They are eager to learn and enjoy coming to school. My school is located in Jackson Heights, NY and it is a Title I school. For many of my students, English is their second language. They all receive free breakfast and lunch. My school is a wonderfully diverse school that celebrates individuality. Our goal is to provide a great education for the students and make them independent thinkers and lifelong learners.
My Project
My project is geared to develop their mathematical and problem solving skills. Many of my students are struggling in mathematics. The use of the slates will help develop their mental math skills as well as a great assessment to further group the students according to their needs. The plain, white, wipe off boards can be used across all content areas as a formative assessment throughout lessons. The mathematically geared slates will help the students when working in small groups to target specific needs. These materials will allow me to see the thinking process that my students take which will in turn enable me to assess their needs. The use of manipulatives is a great way to bring their learning from the concrete to the abstract.
The easel would be used for small group instruction where I can model various strategies and reteach concepts that were not mastered.
Your donation will truly help my students by eliminating their fears of mathematics by practicing it in a more fun way as opposed to a paper and pencil routine.
