Winter Knitting and Sewing

My students need knitting needles for our knitting unit and felt for our sewing project.

My Students

Throughout the year in my class, my students get to explore lots of different hands-on projects and activities including cooking, knitting, sewing, fashion design, interior design, and more! They are always so excited for the hands-on projects we do.

My students are in 6th, 7th, and 8th grade and come from a range of urban, diverse backgrounds.

They are energetic middle schoolers who can't sit still because they want to be up and moving and doing, and I engage them at their level with lots of hands-on activities. My school is an IB (International Baccalaureate) school that works hard to challenge our students to follow the IB Learner Profile Traits of being Principled, Open Minded, Risk Takers, Thinkers, Reflective and more!

My Project

My students will use these materials to complete two units, our Knitting unit and our Sewing unit. My students will use the knitting needles to knit a dish cloth and then move on to a harder project like a scarf. Then we will move on to our Sewing unit where my students will design and then hand-sew the felt into their own stuffed animal.

Having these materials will allow me to teach my students two valuable skills, knitting and sewing.

It is my hope that my students will be able to use these skills outside of school in their everyday lives, either by taking up knitting as a hobby or by using their sewing skills to sew on a button or repair their clothes.
