My Students
"If there's a book you really want to read, but it hasn't been written yet, then you must write it." -Toni Morrison. Writing is a vital part of a child's education. The ability to share thoughts, ideas, and one's imagination with others is a priceless gift.
But for my English Language Learners, writing is one of the most difficult parts of acquiring a new language.
My students have come from numerous countries around the world as refugees. When they arrive at school, many have never spoken a world of English. They work very hard to learn how to speak, read, and write in English. Many find speaking and reading in English to come easily to them. Writing, however, proves to be the most difficult. The students I teach have high expectations for themselves and often grow frustrated when they cannot master the skills involved with writing. As a teacher, I have found writing can be a very hard concept to teach to any learner. However, when working with students that are learning English as another language, the need to be creative and present writing skills in relatable ways can be a challenge.
My Project
I am requesting two writing kits to help my students become more successful. Each kit has resources and picture books that focus on the six traits of good writing (organization, word choice, voice, sentence fluency, ideas, and writing conventions). I have carefully selected kits that are at the right level for my English Language Learners. These writing kits will benefit the students by providing vivid examples of each trait. The lessons are presented in engaging, relatable ways that will spark student's interest and inspire them in their own writing. I believe that with the aide of these kits, my students will be mastering writing skills that were once difficult.
By helping to purchase these writing kits, you will be ensuring that the English Language Learners in my classroom will have the resources necessary to become proficient writers.
In turn, it is my hope that they will have a means of telling their stories that have yet to be told.
