Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Have you ever felt like no matter what you do to try and pay attention in class that it just won't work? That is just how some of my kiddos feel. This is nothing new to my Special Education students. A good bit of my students are diagnosed as ADD, ADHD, hooked on daydreams or they just can't seem to pay attention. It's my duty to find strategies and manipulatives to help keep them on the task at hand...learning.
My first through fourth grade Special Education students reside in the GREAT state of Texas and they're GREAT and full of energy (just like the state, of course).
Unfortunately for them their attention/hyperactive problems don't help them in the classroom much. They go from one distractor (tapping pencils, smoothing hair, tearing holes in pockets, etc.) to the next with learning a tiny bit of content in between. Being a Special Education teacher I think that it is pertinent to do whatever I can to get my students to learn.
My Project
I am an In Class Support Teacher and my kids love when I come in their class. One of the first things they do is give me a compliment either on my earrings or hair and then the never failing question...they ask how many steps I have on my Fitbit. Today at open house while I stood at my Abrakadoodle (Art Club) information table one of my kiddos asked me if we could get Fitbits for a new club instead of Monopoly Games. I wanted to do a Monopoly Monday BUT if the kids would rather race me...why not?
The little one just wanted a Fitbit to beat me in a step challenge and get a gold medal (he must be watching the Olympics).
Little does he know adding more steps to his day will get his brain pumping out answers while he strives to win the daily step challenge. He will also get fit while doing it. The kiddos will be able to wear one of the fitness trackers while at school and check with me at the end of the day to see if they won the challenge.
This will hopefully have them run, skip or dance out all of their energy during recess and when they get back to class they will be ready to learn and be less distracted.
The Fitness Trackers are the big motivation to my kiddos especially at my Action Based Learning Campus. So in all they are doing what their body wants (beating me in the challenge) by getting what their brain needs...knowledge.
