My students are bright, energetic, and oh-so-curious! These 4th & 5th grade students come from different socioeconomic backgrounds and nationalities to form a special kind of learning community in my gifted education enrichment classroom in a small city in Mississippi.
Students come to my gifted class once a week eager to get their minds working and their hands dirty as we tackle projects that develop critical thinking, problem-solving strategies, and team-building.
I am fortunate to work with my students for two consecutive years, and that means I have to keep the learning new, fresh, and exciting. My students teach me as much as I teach them and I do my best to keep up!
My Project
What does it take to get your creative juices flowing? My students like to listen to music, brainstorm out loud, sketch their ideas, move around the room, and stare out the window for inspiration. The problem with the last technique is that our classroom doesn’t have windows!
To help students find their creative flow, I am requesting 3 Skypanels to cover the industrial flourescent lights in our small, windowless classroom.
I expect my students to focus, but sometimes it’s hard to do your best work when you’re cooped up inside concrete walls. The Skypanels will mimic natural sunlight and provide students a glimpse of the outside world with pictures of clouds, birds, and hot air balloons -- there's even a sea turtle in the ocean to really ignite their imaginations! If we can’t have windows facing out, we can have sky lights looking up!
