This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Despite living in the city's second densest neighborhood, my students come to school with smiles on their faces ready to get down to the business of creating, reading, writing, and problem solving.
My students are eager to learn and motivated to make the world a better place.
They are truly a special group that works collaboratively and independently to meet their academic and personal goals. They aren't scared of challenges and they know the meaning of "productive struggle." Watch out world!
My Project
I have always prided myself in being a social justice educator. In my 21 years of teaching I have tried to provide both experiences and materials that reflect the beauty of our diverse world.
This year I am focusing on the concept of Windows and Mirrors to enhance my classroom library.
A mirror is a story that reflects your own culture and helps you build your identity. A window is a resource that offers you a view into someone else's experience. Both types of books are critical in ensuring that students have discussions that help them reflect on their own lives and the lives of others. This is one step in helping our future generations be more kind, understanding, and open to people who are different than them.
Part of this project is also providing writing paper for my students to use at home during distance learning. Students in my class are encouraged to write their own personal narratives that celebrate their unique identity and lived experiences. They are also encouraged to create characters that look like them and speak the same languages.
