Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I work in a diverse community where many languages are spoken and students are eager to learn and participate. Our school serves about 600 students and it is 77% free and reduced priced lunch. I work closely with families to build relationships and ensure we collaborate in building a caring community. Acquiring resources for teaching is crucial in student engagement and developing their desire to learn.
My 5th graders are about to begin a year in which they will learn to take charge of their lives and develop as resourceful learners.
The books they read will help develop interpretation skills and help them make sense of their lives. They will embark in a journey as a community and support each other in learning about themselves and each other. My students will engage in lively classroom discussions, reflect on learning, and share the life lessons from their books.
My Project
Our classroom libraries must reflect the experiences and backgrounds of our students. I firmly believe that representation is key in inspiring our students to succeed academically and in life. By providing these book sets, my students will have opportunities to see themselves and also learn from others' experiences and build empathy.
Books can serve as windows and mirrors to learn more about ourselves and each other, these books will be read in clubs and ignite discussions.
Book clubs are foundation to developing a love for reading and becoming a life long reader. 5th graders will participate in class book clubs and share thoughts, feelings, and grow ideas from their books. Their interpretations will motivate discussions to apply learning beyond the pages they read. These books will help them interpret their lives!
