Windows and Mirrors: Reading to Understand Others and Ourselves

Help me give my students high interest books that also push readers to consider diverse perspectives and experiences to foster empathy for others.

My Project

I work with students in grades 6-12 in a small, girls public school in the neighborhood of Bushwick in Brooklyn, NY. I want readers to engage with books that provide insights into experiences different from their own and reflect experiences similar to their lives. In doing so, students will think deeply about the interconnectedness of human beings and the importance of empathy as we work towards creating a more just, kind, and tolerant world.

Students will collaborate to read, discuss, and complete a project in which they will highlight the diverse experiences and knowledge of the book and demonstrate the interconnectedness of humans.
