Windows and Mirrors: Diverse Stories for Diverse Students
Help me give my students books that reflect the world in which we live.

My Students
I teach at a high needs Title I school, with almost half of the students receiving free or reduced-price lunch. My students work hard and take risks every day in order to grow and progress. They are determined, dedicated, enthusiastic, and engaged. If I had to describe my fifth-grade students in one word, it would be RESILIENT!
Books should mirror the lives of readers and open windows to new worlds.
My students are eager to read stories that deal with issues that they find relevant to their lives. They want to explore identity and experience books with believable characters who look and sound like them.
My Project
My students not only want to read books with characters who look like they do, but are also written by authors of color.
We need more diverse books on our shelves!
Representation is important, and there are many new pictures and young adult books that are available for my students. We need to have greater access to these books and authors and bring them into our classroom.
With the books I am requesting, I'll be able to share diverse stories through our daily read aloud and also place diverse books into my students' hands. These books include characters who have experiences from diverse cultures, backgrounds, families, and disabilities. Community is built in the shared experiences and conversations we have about the books we read. Thanks so much for considering this project!
