Help me give my students the opportunity to not only see how renewable energy operates in the real world, but also to take the role of engineers in the process of designing and refining wind turbines

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My AP Environmental students live in the South Bronx, one of the nation's poorest congressional districts. They have very limited access to outdoor green space, while at the same time experiencing some of the worst health outcomes caused be pollution. They are such inquisitive learners, and AP Environmental Science is a place for them to get exposed to the natural world outside of NYC while also learning about and developing solutions to local environmental problems that directly affect their health and well-being.
My Project
One of the most important concepts taught in AP Environmental Science is how we get our energy. We learn about everything from how non-renewable energy resources are mined to how various types of powerplants work to produce electricity to how to determine how much we are personally consuming. My students perform a full energy audit for our school in a week-long activity, and get to really dig into how to reduce power consumption. Unfortunately, our exploration into renewable energy alternatives is much more abstract and less hands on.
These wind turbine kits will give my students the opportunity to see in real time the diversity of energy conversions that can help power us in a more sustainable way.
They will be able to be engineers that experiment with various turbine blade designs to maximize efficiency, and will consider how this model scales up full size. While the study of energy in AP Environmental Science can be very difficult with difficult math that my students generally struggle with, these kits will help them put that math in context and provide and experience they will always remember.
