This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our classroom is in the basement and has NO WINDOWS! The only source of light is the overhead fluorescent boxes. These work fine when we are moving, reading, drawing, and writing but not when we are doing yoga and meditation.

Our school is a wonderful school in a high poverty area of a big city.

Most of the students come from families with extremely limited resources. But this doesn't stop them from loving school and especially loving the work we do in our Performing Arts Program. Our students thrive on dancing, singing, acting, and circus arts but they also have embraced yoga.

My Project

You would be deeply inspired to enter one of our yoga classes. The students (who are usually VERY active) are all calm and focused on the poses. They breathe deeply and really reach their bodies into the stretches. And if we some how don't keep track of time and have to skip the meditation that ends the period, they are disappointed. One young boy once said, "But I have to meditate. If I don't my thoughts will keep jumping." We used to practice yoga in a room with windows, where we would turn off the lights and let the natural light sooth us, but that can't happen anymore. Our new performing arts room is in the basement with harsh light as the only option. If you help us get these strings of lights, I can mount them around the room and switch off the florescents when we do our yoga. These soft lights I am requesting will be able to help us focus our bodies and thoughts and feel peaceful. And peace is what these students absolutely deserve and need.

Most of our students live in crowded conditions, often with two or more families sharing a 1 or 2 bedroom apartment.

They are always experiencing noise, jostling, and chaotic environments. Please help me give them a sanctuary. Please help me make them better learners by showing them how to calm their minds.
