My Students

Teaching is something I love to do. This year marks my third year as a Special Education teacher for middle school students. I have the pleasure of working with many different students (many of which were my students from previous years).

Many of my students come from a single-parent household where their parents must work long hours in order to make ends meet.

Seeing how many students walk to school alone and return to an empty household after school is worrisome. To them, it is nothing new and they have managed to make it work.

My students live in the South Side of Chicago in a predominantly Spanish-Speaking neighborhood that has been plagued with violence for many years. It is an area where their parents are able to afford an apartment, even if it means living in a neighborhood that is dangerous. My students have been exposed to different situations that have been traumatic, but they continue to strive for something better. What I love about my students is that even though they have been exposed to violence at such a young age, they still come to school with such a positive attitude and a desire to learn.

My Project

Living in a low-income neighborhood is hard for any adult, now imagine how much harder it is for a kid? All of my students come from a home that is below poverty and have minimal resources at home. Parents work multiple jobs to make ends meet and try to find a way to provide the minimal that their kids need to survive.

Many of my students show up to school with an empty stomach but a desire to learn.

My students come to school hungry and as a teacher, I try to have snacks in the classroom that they can snack on and have something in their stomach to get them through the day. Many times my students will ask if they can take snacks home so they have something to eat while they are at home alone and waiting for their parents to get home.

By having snacks available in the classroom, my students will be able to eat something that will allow them to focus on school and not worry about being hungry. This will also allow my students to take snacks home and have something available at their home.
