I need to learn more ways to reach my students, coworkers and our school community and to teach them how to cope with daily stress that they experience in and outside of school by attending the Breathe for Change program.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I have been teaching Spanish and Communications to Jr. High students in the south suburbs of Chicago since 2008. I work with a diverse community of students, 61% of which are from families of socioeconomic disadvantages (calculated by the rate of free/reduced lunch status). 17% of students at my school have IEP's and 15% are English learners. There is a 14.9% unemployment rate for parents in my school district and 13% of adult population education level is below high school degree. Despite their challenges, I see the potential in my students to thrive and become positive leaders in our world's future.
My Project
This yoga and mindfulness program will help me to support the emotional climate of my school community. As a result of the training I will be a certified yoga instructor and qualified to lead wellness classes specifically for our students and school community (teachers, parents and family members).
With all we know and understand about the toxic stress, mental illness and trauma that many students are handling, we all need something more to find healing and to be able to thrive.
The time is now. Please help me to learn more about how to support our young people in growing into peaceful, content, successful human beings. It starts with us, their leaders.
