These are a group of enthusiastic inner-city kids who want to do something besides reading about science all year long.
I love seeing them get excited about going with me after school to study water or check out soil samples and test their home water in the classroom.
We were actually responsible for discovering that there was the lead in our school water supply!
No one wanted to listen to me so students stayed after school to test the water and took actual samples down to the administrator to show her what we found.
Once she saw how passionate the kids were about this, she got people in our building to handle the situation! She kept mumbling about "the professionals said they checked" but they obviously didn't! These kids deserve every chance they can get!
My Project
Every few years, NASA and GLOBE provide an international event for students and teachers to network with others from around the world who are also interested in citizen science. Scientists and environmental leaders working with children and teachers to develop projects, research their ideas, and then give them opportunities to present their work and be trained by professionals in the field.
This type of teacher and student training is something that I could never produce in the classroom!
Being trained by professionals who are n the field and then giving teachers the opportunities to network with other schools and scientists to bring this experience home to their classroom is something that you just can't get from reading a book.
Our students (and teachers) are very excited to make this happen and you can help us! What a chance of a lifetime!
