This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Not all of our classrooms have a way to play music but I have to teach dance in all of those rooms. AND my chorus members need to be able to bring their practice music home.

My school is a diverse and thriving place right where you wouldn't expect it.

Despite budget cuts of over 20% in the last 4 years, we are still going strong. We are located deep in a very urban environment. Well over 50% of our students are English Language Learners, often immigrants themselves. Over 95% of our students qualify for free meals due to their family's low income. But that doesn't stop us from being an exciting school where students want to learn! My students are passionate about the arts education they get and being in chorus is considered a huge honor. These children find beauty wherever they can, and that's often while dancing and singing at school.

My Project

(About the Portable Stereo) Everyday I travel through many classrooms teaching dance- the children and I both love it. But in some rooms there isn't a way to play music!!! We try going to other rooms (which wastes time), bringing in portable stereos from the children's homes (which is a hassle and jeopardizes their possessions), and using the desktop computers in some rooms (which isn't loud enough). It just isn't working. Help us dance where we want! It would be so easy with a small portable stereo that takes both Cd's and iPod's. (About the Blank Cd's) I have been leading our school's chorus for the past four years and each year we get better and better. It is a privilege to be in chorus and students begin asking me about it even before the year begins if they see me in the neighborhood. In the past, the school has purchased blank Cd's for me to burn copies of our music for each child to take home- but with yet another budget cut we can't do that this year.

My students love music and dancing and singing.

Please make it possible for them to do it all. I hate standing in front of a class and saying, "Sorry kids, because of the budget cuts you won't get to hear music this year." The chorus deserves the chance to be the best they can be by practicing at home and my dance classes deserve the chance to dance to music! You can make this simple difference which won't be simple at all to my students.
