My Project
I am a special education teacher in a Title I, self-contained elementary school located in New York City. I currently teach a first and second grade class made up of students diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder and other various learning disabilities. Students in my classroom have poor fine and gross motor skills and limited language. They are all visual, kinesthetic learners and require hands-on materials to aid them in reaching their individual goals in our classroom. By varying our approaches to learning based on each student’s needs, there is greater opportunity for every student to learn and grow.
My students require hands-on activities that provide them with engaging, exciting and interesting opportunities to practice, enrich, and enhance their learning, all while encouraging independence and providing students with an abundance of opportunities and supports to achieve success at their own level.
By donating to our project, you will not only help to improve and increase student attention and focus with the hands on activities we will be receiving, you will also help to increase their phonological and phonemic awareness as well as their academic achievement during reading. By providing them with puppets related to the stories we read it will provide them the opportunity, through ands on materials, to comprehend and act out the stories they read through play!
