My Students
I am a special education teacher in a Title I, self-contained elementary school located in New York City. I currently teach a Kindergarten - 2nd grade fully remote learning class made up of students diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder and other various learning disabilities. Students in my classroom have poor fine and gross motor skills and limited language. They are all visual, kinesthetic learners and require hands-on materials to aid them in reaching their individual goals via our remote classroom. By varying the approaches to learning based on each student’s needs, there is greater opportunity for every student to learn and grow.
Even though we are a fully remote classroom, my students still require materials that provide them with engaging, exciting and interesting opportunities to practice, enrich, and enhance their learning, all while encouraging independence and providing them with an abundance of opportunities and supports to achieve success at their own level.
My Project
Having a variety of texts, that not only connect to our curriculum but that have child friendly language and real life photos, will help to make a difference in my students learning.
The books I am requesting for my current and future students have dynamic pictures and simplistic texts that will help to build reading skills at foundational levels.
It is difficult to find books that relate to our curriculum topics, but that also have language my students can comprehend. My special needs learners are very visual, requiring simple text and real life pictures they can understand and relate to. The books I am requesting use simple words and colorful real life picture!
