This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Teaching in a low-income inner city community for the past 15 years has been an amazing experience. My students are 3rd and 4th graders and have various degrees of special needs. They are sweet, eager to learn and have a great spirit that keeps me on my toes. Teaching a special education self-contained classroom is challenging and exciting at the same time.

Seeing the 'lightbulb' go off when it just clicks is extremely rewarding and they are so proud​ of themselves that they 'GOT IT!'.

Knowing they do not get a lot at home and are often responsible for helping with so many chores after school, makes me want to support them so much more at school. I want my students to know that it's ok to need help and to ask for it. That's how we can grow and learn so much more.

My Project

Having a mixed grade classroom, with so many mixed academic abilities is challenging. The students learn best when in small groups to really target their academic deficits. The kidney table in the room is a great place for a small group lesson, however,​ there are not enough chairs in the room to keep around the table.

The students need to constantly move their own chairs and waste time and energy that could have been used on learning.

Having these stools will save time for the students when called for a group. The stools will also provide a varied sitting experience while on the rug for a whole class lesson or read aloud when some students often ask to sit on a chair.
