My Students
I teach in a program designed to provide the least restrictive environment for students identified as gifted. Once a week identified students are bussed from the twenty elementary schools around our district to our building. Each grade attends one full day of the week. Monday I teach fifth grade, Tuesday is fourth grade, Wednesday is third grade etc.
The moment they walk in our doors, students are able to take ownership of their learning and enjoy experiences that may not be available to them otherwise.
Our students choose their own classes from a variety of topics based largely on STEAM philosophies. Our program is always evolving based on what our students want to learn. We incorporate problem-based learning, respectful communication, and critical thinking skills into much of what we do. This is a safe and comfortable place for our students to be themselves, surrounded by other kiddos that share a love for learning.
My Project
Students in my classroom are blessed to have several flexible seating options. In a previous Donors Choose project our classroom was gifted: balance balls, yoga mats, wobble stools and bean bags. These options have given my students the opportunity to truly work in their least restrictive environment whether it be on the floor lying on a mat, or curled up in a beanbag with a clipboard.
It had never crossed my mind that flexible seating should really include options for students who focus best while the are standing up and moving!
After witnessing first hand the quality of work produced by students when they can take ownership over their personal space while in our classroom, I am a firm believer in giving choice to each student regarding where and how they work best. Last school year I was given a "Standing" laptop work surface. Throughout the year I had students begging to work at my standing work space as it allowed for them to be up and moving while still giving focus to the task at hand. Standing Desks will add an additional layer of comfort and movement to our flexible "seating" options .
