Will the Egg Survive?

My students need craft sticks, tape, and other materials to build a protective barrier around an egg to demonstrate how NASA's Curiosity landed unharmed on Mars.

My Students

NASA's Curiosity rover, is the Earth's largest and most advanced science laboratory ever built. It's mission is to investigate whether or not life used to exist on the planet Mars by looking at its rocks and other materials.

Student population is diverse with less than 50% being white, 40% of Hispanic and African American background, and approximately 12 percent of Asian/other races.

The school is the largest elementary school in the district with approximately 630 students attending, from pre-kindergarten to sixth grade. Like most schools, the dedicated teachers and staff, supportive parents, and children who love coming to this school make up the majority of people.

My Project

With changing demographics, resources, materials, and technology are becoming harder and harder to come by for the classroom teacher who want their students to think "outside of the box". Part of the 5th grade curriculum is to investigate our solar system: planets, moons, asteroid belt, exoplanets, and the Sun. Therefore, students will design and build their own landing vehicle using classroom materials (popsicle sticks, tape, paper, plastic grocery bags, string, etc.) to see whether or not they can successfully protect an uncooked egg from cracking on the surface from heights of twenty-five feet. The video camera will be used during construction, launching, and completion to record students' successes and failures. Students will learn about geometry and physics while using imagination and creativity to construct a landing vehicle that will protect an egg from launch to impact.

With the continued decreased in educational funding, teachers have to come up with new and exciting ways to stimulate their students' imaginations and creativity.

This science lesson will motivate students to learn more about Mars, will stimulate them to ask questions about early life on other planets, and will allow them to use their imaginations and creativity to see if they could build a successful landing vehicle that would protect its valuable cargo.
