My Students
I am a special education teacher in a Title I, self-contained elementary school located in New York City. I have a 1st grade class with students diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder and various learning disabilities. Students in my classroom have poor fine and gross motor skills and limited language. They are visual, hands-on learners and require hands-on materials to aid them in learning to reaching their goals.
We are a center based learning classroom that provides students with exciting and interesting opportunities to practice, enrich, and enhance their learning all while encouraging independence and provide students with an abundance of opportunities to achieve success at their own level.
My Project
Center based instruction allows my students to take charge of their learning! Centers allow them to choose the location in the classroom where they want to work. Currently, during ELA and Math lessons, my students are working in art, science, technology, reading and writing!
The items requested will be used to create a wide variety of materials and activities for students to learn about various concepts, skills, themes, and topics related to our curriculum.
Centers must be tailored to each students individual educational level, needs and interests in order for them to be successful. Due to the fact that my students require constant repetition to master a task, materials must made to withstand many uses. The materials I have requested will allow me to do just that!
