My Students
I am a special education teacher in a Title I, self-contained elementary school located in New York City. I have a 1st grade class with students diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder and various learning disabilities. Students in my classroom have poor fine and gross motor skills and limited language. They are visual, hands-on learners and require hands-on materials to aid them in learning to reaching their goals.
We are a center based learning classroom that provides students with exciting and interesting opportunities to practice, enrich, and enhance their learning all while encouraging independence and provide students with an abundance of opportunities to achieve success at their own level.
My Project
Having a mobile easel with magnetic dry erase board will be an amazing addition to our classroom! My students are all visual and hands-on learners, and an easel will allow me to prepare multiple activities and provide students with the opportunity to work on various tasks. For example, we will use dry erase markers to work on spelling or use magnets to sequence events in a story. They will also be able to participate in whole group and small group activities where they can see all of the information presented in one cohesive area. The magnetic function during reading, math, and science gives students the opportunity to get out of their seats and interact and move things around on the board! The clip feature will also allow us to lower the easel and use it in the art center as a place to draw and paint. The fact that it is on wheels makes it easy to move and will allow the students to bring it to whatever center they are working in!
The easel will make our center based learning groups more functional and enjoyable.
