As my students prepare to embark on the next chapter of their lives, there is no better time for them to engage with Caste: The Origins of Our Discontents by Isabel Wilkerson. This powerful book offers profound insights into the systems of power that shape our society. Wilkerson delves into the deeply entrenched hierarchies of caste, shedding light on the structures that continue to influence not only the course of history, but also the lived experiences of individuals today.
Reading this book will provide my students with a critical framework to understand the complexities of race, class, and power in ways that go beyond surface-level conversations.
As they move into adulthood, these young minds will encounter a world that demands nuanced perspectives on issues of social justice, inequality, and human rights. Caste will help them recognize how historical forces continue to impact contemporary society, encouraging them to think more deeply about their roles as active citizens in shaping a more equitable future.
