My Project
Our school is called the New York Harbor Middle School for a reason: The harbor is our classroom! Once a week (sometimes more) we venture out of our school building to conduct field science along our waterfront in Red Hook, Brooklyn. Whether we are collecting data about the weather, measuring oysters at our oyster research station or sampling for water quality, my curious, creative, and conscientious 6th graders are the next generation of conservationists using what they learn in science and math to make a difference.
Our weekly field excursions not only build interest and connection with the natural world, but provide an environment to do real conservation science.
NY Harbor is home to a great diversity of wildlife, especially birds. Every field excursion we make, we keep a log of the different species we see. These binoculars and spotting scope will allow us to see so much more on our trips, and even give us the ability to take special birding trips during periods of migration.
