My Students

My wonderful students are second graders at a Title 1 school. We serve students from high poverty families and many ESL students as well. Our school is 100% free breakfast and lunch. These children have a thirst for knowledge and come to school every day ready to learn. The drive of these children to learn and lead in their environment is amazing. Our school family knows no bounds and our students inspire us every day. They are our future and our future is bright!

My Project

Each day our students come with open minds ready to absorb anything technology related. They are bloggers, gamers, iPad users, Lego model builders.....and more. We also want them to be fluent readers who can use a device to program and code!

Our vision is to provide opportunities for each student to use cutting-edge technologies, in combination with fictional text, to build an understanding of their role in a rapidly changing technological world.

We know that with the infusion of technology, paired with STEM concepts, we can actively engage our students in the core classroom curriculum and they can achieve great success.

In our second grade classroom, we want to create a literacy-based coding/programming center to increase our students' reading comprehension and coding/programming skills. These two skills are crucial in preparing our students for future careers....many of which don't even exist today. Having a set of tablets to use in a center-style rotation, with cases and keyboards, will allow us to provide coding/programing activities that are based in common core literacy standards. Throughout the year, we will use the tablets (in conjunction with the Tynker and Kodeable apps) and the fictional text "Hello Ruby, Adventures in Coding" to introduce coding/programming concepts during center rotations. This rotation will not only meet one of the most important common core literacy standard RL.2.4., but also support ISTE Student standards 4c (Innovative Designers) and 5c and 5d (Computational Thinkers).

Additionally, as a part of our collaborative Professional Learning Community of Grade 2 teachers, each teacher is requesting their own sets of tablets to ensure that all grade 2 students are provided equitable opportunities. Once all grade 2 classrooms receive their tablets, we would combine and share devices to do additional whole-group activities.
