Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am a first grade teacher. I teach in a low economic area where funds are very limited. My building is about 70% free and reduced lunch.
In my classroom I like to provide a print rich environment as well as quality literature for my children. I have some books that have been given to me through our reading series and some that have been purchased with my own money. My library is appealing for my children currently. However, I do not have enough books to maintain a revolving library for the interests of my students, their reading abilities, and quality literature. Our funds are very limited for resources in classrooms.
I feel that by providing my students with ample supply of good quality literature and changing books throughout my classroom will help enhance reading identities, improve skills because they would be interested in books, and establish a love for reading in my children. The resources that I would need to complete this would be books that can be read aloud and reread, leveled books for the students and books that interest them.
I feel that by surrounding children with such literature will improve their reading skills and may inspire these children to continue reading. These students need as much exposure to books as possible, so why not give them that at school?
