I teach 125 active 5th-graders. Over half of the students are below grade-level in Math and Reading. I want to make learning fun and motivate my students to want to learn. Participating in an experience that students associate with fun, can be motivating as well as instructional. I want to incorporate virtual-reality game-playing in motivating my students to want to learn.
Many students have found school to be confusing or frustrating. As a result many lack motivation to achieve beyond just passing the class. Others who want to achieve have difficulty with comprehension and concept retention.
I want to use the Wii game system as a motivator to let students earn time to play the Wii during enrichment time and before or after school. Rewards will be associated with showing effort, such as having every homework for the week earn 5 minutes of playing time on the game, Big Brain Academy, which consists of puzzles in logic, reasoning, computation, memory and identification. While playing this game, thinking skills are improved. In addition, game playing carries a more fun connotation with a less judgmental feel. Students who are less successful in their normal learning can feel encouraged to participate in the game playing because it won’t seem to be the type of learning for which they think they’re not good. Trying a new way to accomplish learning gives them the hope of success.
You can make it possible for students who think they "can't do,” discover that they really CAN!
