This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our school is a Title I school with predominantly English language learners who come from low income families. Ninety percent of our children come from families that are at or below poverty level.

My class is full of bright, active first graders who are excited to begin the path of learning.

They come in every day ready to experience new things. I want to start them on their way to being lifelong learners in an environment that makes learning joyful and makes my children feel respected and loved.

My Project

First graders are active, enthusiastic learners. We spend quite a bit of learning time on the floor. Being on the floor allows us to be in close proximity for stories, games and partner discussions.

Learning on the floor helps the children bond and grow as a community.

Because the children are still learning about personal space they sometimes have trouble staying in one spot. The carpet I ordered has a specific place for each child which will help the children better concentrate as they learn.

My students love reading and writing on the floor. On the floor they are more focused and spend more time on their reading and writing than previously. We are slowly adding to our flexible seating options. The comfy floor seats will be a great addition to our collection.
