My students are inquisitive and wiggly! In my classroom, I strive to build a safe community of learners. My little 7 and 8-year-old friends are loving, caring, curious, and eager to learn. With an entire school district shifting to a more collaborative and authentic, deep learning, I want my students to know that they are welcome to move around freely in my classroom during appropriate times to collaborate comfortably and confidently with their classmates to get their best ideas and thinking going. We need to be able to move our bodies to get our brains moving with flexible seating!
My Project
Using alternate seating like wiggle chairs and textured seat pads, my students will rock and bounce and wiggle on the wiggle pads and chairs while doing their desk work, reading a book, or collaborating with classmates without having to leave their desk space. They will use these items daily in my classroom and other students will use it too when we do classroom rotations for differentiated instruction. I want to create many comfortable spaces in my classroom that students can go to to feel safe to work in while getting their wiggly energy out. I have used several yoga balls in the past and it has helped my students concentrate better and get their work done faster, as well as get a little exercise time in! Based on data and research, students are able to focus better and express themselves more confidently when given several comfortable, developmentally-appropriate seating choices and spaces in the room.
