Wiggling While We Work!

My students need nine wobble stools to helps them get the movement many so desperately need while they work!

My Students

I am lucky to be in a co-teaching situation in which we are fortunate to be working with forty-four first graders who want to learn and want to persevere and do their very best.

We are an Arts Integration Magnet School of 625 students where the arts, design, creativity and movement are the focus of our instruction.

Our students come from all over the city. They are hard working, creative students who are working diligently to be ready to learn every day!

My Project

"Sitting still is overrated. It makes sense for the opera or for meditating, but in most classrooms and child care centers, it's given far more honor than it deserves. Children need to move." ~Tom Hunter, National Association for the Education of Young Children. When doing a survey project on data collection in math, we asked our students what their favorite school subject was. 90% of our students responded with either physical education or recess. Upon discussion, the students' reasons were overwhelmingly centered on the fact that they can run around, are never sedentary, and are able to get their wiggles out. Our focus question was posed to the kids about how we can replicate that in the classroom. Overwhelmingly, they responded with chairs that move!

Upon research of various types of alternative seating, the students found that they were able to focus better moving on the wobble stools with the pivoting base.

While we were able to get a few, we found that the students were begging for more. The students asked if we could line our guided group table where we meet for guided math and reading groups, with wobble stools so they could concentrate better. These would add even more movement opportunities for the students to reach the recommended 60 minutes of exercise all students need while meeting their academic needs.
