Wiggling and Wobbling to Success!

My students need of flexible seating within our classroom to help increase academic performance and focus.

My Students

The lump in my throat grew larger, and my vision grew blurry as I watched the smiles of success envelope my students' faces. Many of my students are experiencing success for the first time, and to stand back cheering them on is one of the greatest experiences of my life.

At MCE school, we are privileged to work with students who live in low socio-economic families.

Many of these families have never even left the north side of I-10, been to a public library, or felt sand beneath their toes. In my specific classroom, I also teach students with a range of learning and behavioral challenges. It is imperative that their learning is done in creative and hands-on ways. Creating experiences within the classroom to help build their background knowledge is a daily, weekly, and yearly goal.

MCE is a school that sometimes doubles as a revolving door. Students are always moving into and out of our school due to their current living situation. With that in mind, the students often have a high academic frustration level while their love for school is very low. The goal in room 33 is for each student to feel success.

My Project

Flexible seating is proven to have major academic benefits. The various types of seating provides opportunity for physical activity throughout class. Physical activity is linked to higher academic performance, better health, and improved behavior. This project includes a wobble stools, exercise balls, a table with chairs, and wobble cushions. Each of these options will reach different types of learners. The wobble stools and exercise balls are very beneficial for students that needs to wiggle while they work. The wobble cushions tend to benefit students who like to work closer to the ground and students who have sensory needs. These cushions have two different sides. Each side has a different texture. The last item in the cart, the table and chairs, is a taller bistro table with two chairs. This seating option is beneficial for students who may not like to wiggle while they work, but are also not comfortable in a "typical" desk and chair. Another benefit of this type of seating is the height. It allows students be a bit elevated in comparison to other seating options.

By funding this project, you will give students with various learning needs the ability to increase their health, behavior, and focus within the classroom.

Many of the students in our classroom face many learning obstacles that range from poor home situations to special needs. Flexible seating within our classroom will allow students to choose the best work environment for them, which will result in better academic performance. After all, we are facilitating lifelong learners who will become our future leaders!
