We work with a very diverse population of students. Our school partners with Cincinnati Children's Hospital and hosts many of the students and siblings of students that are here on a medical visa.
We aspire for our classroom to be warm, welcoming and inviting for all of our students, regardless of background or ability.
Our students come from a wide range of economic and ethnic backgrounds. Many of our students are English Language Learners and speak many different languages including: English, Spanish, Hindi, Urdu, Bengali, Mandarin, Cantonese, Japanese and Arabic. We also service a wide range of academic needs.
Our aspiration is to make our room a place where everyone can be successful. To achieve this, we sat down with our students and asked, "How can we make this classroom an even better place for you to learn?" The overwhelming response was that students wanted to have comfortable seating options and choice in which would help them learn best.
From this desire, we adjusted our classroom design with our students' input last year.
We had limited resources, but tried to think outside the box and allow students the opportunity to discover how they learn best. We found that the most popular seating options were those in which students could wiggle or bounce, and it really helped them to focus their attention as well. In addition, it helped us teach our students about an active lifestyle and helped them improve their overall well being.
We would like to continue this project this year with high quality seating options such as the yoga cushions, active seating stools and other seating options that will really allow our students to focus, build core strength and feel comfortable in our classroom.
