Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My kids are bright, energetic, full of imagination and fun. I say my kids because that's exactly what they are, I am not only their teacher but sometimes I truly do feel like their mom. I spend more time with my students than I do with my two young daughters at home.
Just like my daughters I want the absolute best for my students.
My heart breaks when I see my kids walking around homeless people on their way to school, or hearing stories about how their families must move again after being evicted. Many of my students have witnessed things that most other six year old children wouldn't dream about.
79% of our students receive free or reduced lunch in comparison to the state average of 52%. Many of these students also come from single parent families. I come to work everyday with the goal of providing a warm, safe and supportive environment for my kids since many of them do not have that in their own homes.
My Project
The materials needed for this project will help create a safe and effective learning environment for my students.
Flexible classrooms give students a choice in what kind of learning space works best for them, and helps them to work collaboratively, communicate, and engage in critical thinking.
The three Hokki stools and three Wobble chairs are needed for my energetic first graders who have a difficult time staying seated at their desks. Because there are only six stools I will rotate them every week by table group. Giving each group a chance to sit on something other than a normal chair. This will motivate the students to do their best as they wait for their group to have a turn.
Lastly, I will use the round table during universal access time so that my students will have another area to engage in learning. I have one small table from home already that only fits two students and they all beg to sit there, so having another table will benefit our classroom greatly!
Having these new materials will be the first step in creating a flexible classroom for my kids. Giving them the learning opportunities that they so desperately need and deserve!
