My Students

Here a Wiggle, there a Wiggle, everywhere a Wiggle, Wiggle! Can you remember sitting in class as a child thinking you were going to explode if you had to sit still for one more minute? I can, and that is the way most of my children feel while sitting in their hard plastic chairs during class.

I teach an amazing group of second graders who are very sweet, creative, active, intelligent, eager to learn, and WIGGLY!

Many of their bodies are little bundles of energy. All this energy can make it difficult for them to remain focused during group time. In our classroom we have two seat cushions we are borrowing. These cushions help the students sitting on them to remain focused. Each day the students come in and try to be the first to ask to sit on the cushions. Many could benefit from it, but the resources are not available. I teach in a high poverty Title 1 school in a rural area in southwest Oklahoma. We have a high percentage of special needs and autistic students who are main-streamed in the regular classrooms, as well as students with ADHD, and other students who just have a hard time sitting still.

My Project

My students need enough Bitty Bottom seat cushions for everyone in the classroom. When my students "get the wiggles" during class they are actually seeking sensory input which, studies show, increases their ability to concentrate. Students with attention and concentration difficulties crave movement. These materials would allow my students that often have a hard time focusing on their work, to concentrate on the material they are being taught in the classroom. Many of the students have ADHD and have the "wiggles" when they are sitting in a desk. These materials will help them to stop fidgeting and losing focus, so they can work hard and pay attention to the lesson. This movement and fidgeting creates an "active sitting" experience that increases attention and decreases other non-preferred fidgeting activities.

Your donation will give these fabulous young students a chance to wiggle and move safely while still concentrating on academics.

Instead of bothering their neighbor, they will get the movement they need thanks to the seat cushions your donation will help to provide.
