This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

The wiggles is not only a kid friendly music group, it's also a condition that affects my students through out the day, especially after a particularly challenging lesson. Being in a special day classroom, it is very important to incorporate breaks throughout the day, whether brain or body.

I teach in a high needs area where many of our students are second generation or have come from another country to search for better opportunities.

Our neighborhood, though historic, is also located in the middle of a high gang activity and high poverty area. School is the safe place for students. And it also the place they can explore and learn. My class is a small learning community of 2nd-3rd grades. Most of my students have been diagnosed with a learning disability, such as ADHD, Specific Learning Disability, or Emotional Behavioral Disorder. Many of them have been bounced around either from school to school or class to class until they were diagnosed. Therefore, it is imperative that my students feel safe and supported in their academics. My goal for each of them is to build a strong foundation in learning that will foster a confidence and life long love for learning. Will you support us on our journey to learn now so we can soar for a lifetime?

My Project

The best way to incorporate brain and body breaks throughout our day is simply having my students move--whether to a new group table or new type of seat. Also by having these different seating options, it also helps with setting up an instant quiet area, especially if a student is having a particularly frustrating time. Having a space or seating area as a quiet zone can help calm them down. By having Hokki stools, Comfy Seats, a storage stool, Soft Seats, reading pillows, and chair socks for various options in my room, I can quickly put together my differentiated learning groups without having to disrupt the other students or being able to mix up our configurations so students can work with different partners.

This project will help with creating a classroom environment that is both inviting and innovative for my students.

The different seating options and choices that these items will provide, will help with their learning day by incorporating very much needed breaks and quiet zones. This project will help engage both body and mind in the classroom.
